TRACK AND FIELD The women’s 200-meter final
(nbcolympics.com, 4 p.m.) is loaded with decorated runners. The 100
champion Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce of Jamaica and the 400 champion Sanya
Richards-Ross of the United States are going for their second golds of
these Games. The field also includes the two-time defending 200 champion
Veronica Campbell-Brown of Jamaica; Allyson Felix of the United States,
the silver medalist in ’04 and ’08; and Carmelita Jeter of the United
States, the silver medalist in the 100 this year. The decathlon
competition (nbcolympics.com, 5:10 a.m.) begins with the first five
events. Ashton Eaton, who set the world record at the United States
Olympic trials, is the favorite and is seeking to improve on his
performance from last year’s world championships, where he finished
second to his teammate Trey Hardee. NBC, 8 p.m. (taped)
BASKETBALL As the men’s basketball tournament heads
into the elimination rounds, the American team is preaching defense,
despite averaging 117.8 points a game and allowing 79.6 points per game.
“I would like to see our defense play a little bit longer, as close to
40 minutes then to 20, 25, 30,” LeBron James said. In the quarterfinals,
the Americans face Australia (5:15 p.m.), but the other three matchups
feature fierce regional rivals: Lithuania vs. Russia (9 a.m.), France
vs. Spain (11:15 a.m.) and Argentina vs. Brazil (3 p.m.). All games live on NBCSN.
BEACH VOLLEYBALL It is the swan song for Misty
May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh Jennings, the two-time gold medalists who
will be playing their last Olympic match together on Wednesday.
May-Treanor plans to retire after these Games. In three Olympics
tournaments, the duo have lost only two sets. Perhaps it is appropriate
that they are facing another American pair in the final, April Ross and
Jennifer Kessy, who are in their first Olympics. nbcolympics.com, 4 p.m., NBC, 8 p.m. (taped)
