Doug Mills/The New York TimesAndy Murray dropped his racket after serving an ace to defeat Roger Federer to capture gold in men’s singles on Sunday.
A breakthrough Olympics for the British has perhaps its greatest
breakthrough of all. After four losses in Grand Slam finals, Andy Murray
broke through for the biggest title of his career, winning Olympic gold
with a stunning 6-2, 6-1, 6-4 rout of his rival Roger Federer.
Murray finished the improbably lopsided win in style, hitting two
consecutive aces and crouching to the ground as he covered his face in
disbelief.
Federer won the silver for Switzerland and Juan Martin del Potro of Argentina took bronze.
Murray had a chance to double his gold haul later Sunday when he
played in the mixed doubles final with Laura Robson against the
Belarusians Victoria Azarenka and Max Mirnyi.
