Weymouth Journal: British Victory Spurs Sausage Sales

Periodically throughout the Olympics, The New York Times will check in with Dennis Spurr, owner of the Fantastic Sausage Factory in Weymouth, England, a pretty town on the coast where the sailing events are taking place. Spurr’s sausage business was targeted by the Olympic branding authorities in 2007 after he put up a sign featuring the Olympic five-ring logo fashioned out of sausage links. He took it down on their demands but replaced it with a sign featuring five squares made out of sausage links.

How are you doing?
A.

We’re doing really well, actually; everything’s changed since I last spoke to you. Everybody’s got Olympic fever. Yesterday it was phenomenal here. We were busy in the morning, people were sort of buying bacon rolls to take over to the sailing event because our prices are a lot cheaper. In the afternoon, after Ben Ainslie had been given his medal, blimey, I’ve never seen so many people in me life. We were smashed in the shop. We had queues right down the road for hot dogs and sausages. Read more…
