The Olympic action today center on track and field, with Jenn Suhr of the United States winning gold in the women’s pole vault, finally beating two-time gold medalist Yelena Isinbayeva of Russia, who settled for a bronze.
The finals of the men’s 400 meters and 400-meter hurdles turned into a Caribbean celebration, with Fellix Sanchez of the Dominican Republic winning the hurdles ahead of American Michael Tinsley and Kirani James of Grenada taking the 400 meters at only 19 years old.
Women’s soccer moved to the semifinals, where the United States team won a wild 4-3 game over Canada in extra time of the second overtime, Alex Morgan scoring only minutes before the game headed to penalty kicks. The Americans will meet Japan in the gold medal game after Japan beat France, 2-1, in the other semifinal.
Gymnastics featured individual apparatus finals in the men’s rings, won by Brazil’s Arthur Nabarrete Zanetti, and women’s uneven bars, won by Aliya Mustafina of Russia. Yang Hak-seon of South Korea won the men’s vault.
