Claressa Shields won the first gold medal for the United States in women’s boxing, making its Olympic debut, with a dominating performance in the middleweight gold medal match. Shields’s devastating combinations kept Nadezda Torlopova off balance the entire bout on the way to Shields’s 19-12 victory. And she is only 17 years old.
Katie Taylor won Ireland’s first gold medal of the Games in the lightweight division and Nicola Adams of Britain got the crowd rolling with her victory in the flyweight bout.
It was a big day for American women’s teams in soccer, water polo, volleyball and basketball. The United States team won gold in soccer, avenging its World Cup loss to Japan with a 2-1 win in the gold medal game on two goals by Carli Lloyd.
In water polo, the United States women beat Spain to win its first gold medal after taking silver in 2000 and 2008 and bronze in 2004.
The United States women’s volleyball teams beat South Korea in the semifinals, earning a shot at their first gold. United States women’s basketball team came from behind to beat Australia, 86-73, in their semifinal.
